Exploring Nature for homeschool

Choosing to homeschool has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my kids.

I could go on and on (and I do) about the benefits of homeschooling.

I have stated before that my favorite part about homeschooling is the flexibility to do whatever we want, go wherever we want, and learn about our own interests for the day.

But one of the top favorite homeschool fieldtrips that my kids love is getting out exploring!

Getting out to explore nature, and just being outside, is always a ton of fun.

This December has been a cold month. So we have enjoyed bundling up to go outside in the sun on the warmish days.

But this day, we were able to take some time outside with their Daddy!

If you think Dads don’t make good homeschool teachers, just take them outside! Some of my greatest childhood memories are of being outside with my Dad. So I love being able to support the creation of the same memories for my kiddos.

How to explore

Getting outside doing almost anything can be the best feeling on a sunny day. Fun activities include: hiking, trail walking, biking, fishing, mud puddles, mud pies, rock throwing into a creek, you name it!

If you are thinking, my kids hate hiking, that’s ok. There is way more to do than just hiking. Take them to a creek or a river and just sit. See how their imaginations and creativity flow.

Kids can literally not resist throwing a rock or two. And outside is the best place to do it!

On this day

On this specific day, we found that the creek by the house was completely frozen over. We tested it many times to see what might crack the ice. The kids tried breaking the edges of the ice with sticks. Hubby even threw a 30+ pound rock to see if it would crack.

Luckily for us, this ice was frozen solid, which meant we could go for a little ice walk.

The kids absolutely loved it and enjoyed every minute.

Making memories

Some parents may say, this isn’t real education, because the kids aren’t learning anything.

Maybe not, but this kind of day is the day that childhood memories are made.

Do you think a child will remember how many hours they worked at a desk? Or would they prefer to have memories with their daddy throwing rocks?

I am so grateful that I chose to homeschool so that we can have the opportunities to make memories like this last.
