How to teach Goal Setting to your Teen

How much does your teen practice goal setting and self improvement?

Often? . . . Sometimes? . . . Never?

If your teen does not currently practice any type of goal setting, don’t worry! Most teens don’t consciously set goals. But I bet your teen probably has some goals that they would like to achieve.

Why set goals?

I personally LOVE setting goals for myself!

Setting goals helps me:

1) stay focused on what I truly want out of life,

2) stay encouraged with working towards those goals,

3) helps me remember the things that are truly important in my life. (For me, that’s focusing on my kids, and not getting distracted with things that don’t really matter).

I believe goal setting is an important part of continuous self improvement!

We can help our teens and students learn to emphasize self improvement as a life long pursuit!

By setting and keeping big goals for ourselves, we can be a leading example for our kids that they can dream big and work hard towards achieving those goals!

How to set Goals?

Sit down with your kid, and take a few minutes to write down the big goals and dreams they have for themselves. These goals can be 6 month goals (for example, earn better test grades, Or they can be 10 year goals (for example, I want to be an astronaut after college).

I recommend writing 3 to 5 goals down on a piece of paper, and then posting that paper up where your child can see it and read it every day.

Those goals that they wrote down can be a visual reminder to work harder every day to achieve those goals. It can be the inspiration and encouragement they might need when life gets hard and they feel worn down!

I personally will have multiple sections written down for different areas of my life.

For example, the first section might have a header of family goals, with 3 goals listed underneath. The second section might have a header of business goals, with 3 goals listed underneath. The third section might have a header of exercise goals with 3 goals listed underneath.

Having multiple sections is great for focusing on multiple areas of our lives and being well rounded and multi-passionate.

What goal setting teaches your teen

The best part of goal setting, is that it teaches your child that they do not need to feel stuck or struggling with where they are!

As a tutor, I work with many teens that feel stuck and overwhelmed with grades and learning.

But I do NOT want your child to feel like they are stuck where they are! I want them to know that they can achieve anything and to feel encouraged towards their future, and not frustrated or overwhelmed!

I want EVERY student to know that they can achieve their goals, if they work hard towards it! That is why I LOVE working with teens; to help them move towards those goals when they might need a little help!

If you want a little help with moving your teen forward, then I would love to walk alongside you in this journey! I would love to give your teen the tools they need for school, AND to give you the encouragement that it will all be ok!

School does not have to be this hard, and grades should not cause so much fear!
