10 Things To Consider Before Becoming A Homeschooling Parent

Deciding whether or not to homeschool your children can be an incredibly difficult decision. Homeschooling has many advantages, and for some families, it may be the best choice. However, there are also many things to consider before taking the plunge into homeschooling. So here are ten of the most important things to think about when considering becoming a homeschooling parent.

1. Educational Goals

One of the most important things to consider is what kind of educational goals you have for your child. As a homeschool teacher, you are in charge of your child's curriculum and overall education plan, so it is important that you know what your expectations are for them academically. Do you want them to work at an accelerated pace? Do you want them to focus on certain subjects more than others? What types of learning activities do you plan on implementing? By understanding how to write a syllabus and having an effective homeschool curriculum in place, you can better prepare for the journey ahead and ensure that your kids are still getting the highest level of education.

2. Time Commitment

Homeschooling requires a great deal of time and commitment from parents and students. As a parent, you will need to devote several hours each day, and sometimes more, to teaching your child and managing their education program. Both parents must understand the level of commitment required by homeschooling before they make the decision to do so, as it can be quite demanding on all parties involved. Not all parents are aware of this; however, it is a critical factor to consider before taking the plunge. If your children don't receive the time and attention they need, their education will suffer. So if you're interested in homeschooling, make sure you have the time and energy to commit. . Services like ABCmouse offer engaging and entertaining content, so you can leave your kids to get on with these exercises when you need some time.

3. Financial Costs

Another thing to consider when deciding whether or not to homeschool is the financial cost involved with doing so. Homeschool materials and supplies can be expensive, and if parents choose to join outside classes or organizations, they may also incur additional costs. It is important that parents factor in these potential expenses when making their decision in order to ensure they have enough money saved up for any schooling-related purchases that may arise throughout their journey as homeschoolers. On the other hand, homeschooling is cheaper than traditional schooling institutions, and the flexibility that comes with it can benefit some families, allowing them to save money in other areas.

4. Socialization Opportunities

Socialization is one of the biggest concerns people tend to have about homeschooling their children; however, there are still plenty of ways for homeschoolers to socialize with other kids their age! For example, many cities offer co-op classes where small groups of students can come together and learn under one teacher or join local sports teams or scouting groups. Homeschoolers can also attend online discussions or join homeschooling networks to meet other students and families like theirs. With a bit of creativity and effort, you can ensure your child has plenty of opportunities for socialization.

5. Support System

A strong support system is essential when embarking on any journey, especially when it comes to something as big as switching over from a traditional school setting to a home-based learning environment! Parents should seek advice from experienced educators and other homeschoolers who have been through this process before. This way, they can gain insight into how best to manage their own home-based educational programs while also having someone available who can provide helpful advice if needed throughout their journey! A strong support system is crucial for parents and children when making the transition to homeschooling, as it will help them stay motivated and on track with their studies.

6. Space For Learning

When homeschooling, ensuring your children have a suitable space for studying and learning is essential. It's best to create a dedicated area in the home that allows your child to focus on their studies without distraction. This could be anything from a separate room or just a designated corner of the house. Think about what type of environment your child needs to concentrate in and ensure they have access to the necessary materials, such as books, a computer, and other supplies. This space should also be comfortable and inviting to help them stay focused and motivated. Not all families have the luxury of extra space; fortunately, there are plenty of creative ways to make any room more conducive for learning.

7. Curriculum Options

Another important point when considering homeschooling is finding the right curriculum for your child's learning style and individual needs. There are many different curriculums available, so it is important to take the time to research and find one that works best for your child. The curriculum should be tailored to their interests and ability level in order to keep them engaged and help them reach their full potential. Parents struggling to find the right curriculum can consult an experienced educator or homeschooling group for advice. There are also various homeschooling platforms that allow parents to seek advice and guidance from experts.  One such platform is ABCmouse; they are indeed professionals that any parent considering homeschooling can consider lending assistance. ABCmouse is a popular online educational platform for young children. It offers various engaging and interactive activities, games, and lessons that help kids learn math, reading, and other important skills. ABCmouse is also one of the few educational platforms that are accessible on both desktop and mobile devices. Giving your child the best curriculum and adding various options could only benefit them in the long run.

8. Scheduling Considerations

When it comes to homeschooling, parents have the freedom and flexibility to choose the pace and schedule of their child's learning experience. However, it is important that they have a plan in place for how they will manage this time, as well as establish boundaries between school and home life. Parents should ensure that they are providing their children with enough time and space to learn while also considering the other needs of their family. Establishing a routine and setting aside specific times for homeschooling can help parents stay organized while maintaining a healthy balance between schoolwork and other activities. Included in these schedules should be breaks, lunchtime, and physical activity to allow your child to stay active and healthy.

9. Goals And Benchmarks

When embarking on the homeschooling journey, setting realistic goals and expectations for your child is essential. This can help ensure that you are providing quality education and helping them reach their full potential. Establishing specific benchmarks throughout the year will also allow parents to monitor their child's progress and make adjustments as needed. You can also use these milestones to measure your child's academic success and determine if they are meeting their goals. Online tools and resources can be incredibly useful when it comes to tracking progress, setting goals, and measuring success. Teaching your child to use these tools can also help them stay organized and motivated throughout the year.

10. Challenges And Rewards

When considering whether or not to homeschool, it is important to remember that there will be challenges along the way. Parents should be aware of these potential issues and strive to create an environment where they are able to handle any problems that may arise. Parents must also recognize their child's successes and provide positive reinforcement to increase their motivation and desire to learn. Celebrating the small successes along the way can help keep your child motivated and make homeschooling a rewarding experience for everyone involved!

Conclusion

Homeschooling can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for both parents and children. However, it is important to take the time to consider all of the factors involved before making the commitment. Taking into account all the things mentioned above can help parents make an informed decision and ensure that their child receives a quality education. Homeschooling is no longer seen as an alternative educational option but rather as a viable choice that offers a variety of benefits. With dedication and commitment, parents can provide their children with a quality education while creating a unique and rewarding learning experience.

Exploring Nature for homeschool

Choosing to homeschool has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my kids.

I could go on and on (and I do) about the benefits of homeschooling.

I have stated before that my favorite part about homeschooling is the flexibility to do whatever we want, go wherever we want, and learn about our own interests for the day.

But one of the top favorite homeschool fieldtrips that my kids love is getting out exploring!

Getting out to explore nature, and just being outside, is always a ton of fun.

This December has been a cold month. So we have enjoyed bundling up to go outside in the sun on the warmish days.

But this day, we were able to take some time outside with their Daddy!

If you think Dads don’t make good homeschool teachers, just take them outside! Some of my greatest childhood memories are of being outside with my Dad. So I love being able to support the creation of the same memories for my kiddos.

How to explore

Getting outside doing almost anything can be the best feeling on a sunny day. Fun activities include: hiking, trail walking, biking, fishing, mud puddles, mud pies, rock throwing into a creek, you name it!

If you are thinking, my kids hate hiking, that’s ok. There is way more to do than just hiking. Take them to a creek or a river and just sit. See how their imaginations and creativity flow.

Kids can literally not resist throwing a rock or two. And outside is the best place to do it!

On this day

On this specific day, we found that the creek by the house was completely frozen over. We tested it many times to see what might crack the ice. The kids tried breaking the edges of the ice with sticks. Hubby even threw a 30+ pound rock to see if it would crack.

Luckily for us, this ice was frozen solid, which meant we could go for a little ice walk.

The kids absolutely loved it and enjoyed every minute.

Making memories

Some parents may say, this isn’t real education, because the kids aren’t learning anything.

Maybe not, but this kind of day is the day that childhood memories are made.

Do you think a child will remember how many hours they worked at a desk? Or would they prefer to have memories with their daddy throwing rocks?

I am so grateful that I chose to homeschool so that we can have the opportunities to make memories like this last.

Our Experience at The Great Wolf Lodge

There are many reasons I LOVE homeschooling!

Just one of the MANY reasons I love to homeschool include all of the fun trips we get to take, and call it a field trip day.

Don’t you wish that your child’s school would send them to do more hands on learning, instead of stuck in a boring classroom behind a desk all day?

Me too! That is how real learning is supposed to be!

Students, especially kids, were never designed to learn at a desk for 8 hours a day!

Schools should DEFINATLY be taking way more field trips throughout the school year! The downside is, lack of school funding prevents schools from doing their best for your kid. (Just another reason why I hate public schools!).

One of our absolute favorite trips ever is to The Great Wolf Lodge!

What is the Great Wolf Lodge?

Great Wolf Lodge is a renowned chain of indoor water park resorts that offers a unique and immersive experience for families and guests of all ages. With its origins dating back to 1997, the Great Wolf Lodge has become a popular destination for those seeking a combination of water-based fun, comfortable accommodations, and a variety of family-friendly activities.

The attention to detail extends to the accommodations, with themed suites that enhance the overall experience. Why is this a great destination for homeschool families?

Great Wolf Lodge is an exceptional destination for homeschooling families, offering a unique blend of education and entertainment. Beyond the thrilling water park experiences and family-friendly accommodations, the lodge provides an enriching environment for homeschoolers.

The lodge's immersive atmosphere, often themed around a woodland setting, serves as a living classroom for children. Families can explore the natural elements incorporated into the resort's design, turning the stay into a hands-on lesson in architecture and environmental awareness.

From character interactions that promote social skills to interactive story time sessions fostering a love for literature, the lodge integrates learning seamlessly into the vacation experience.

Great Wolf Lodge transforms a family getaway into an educational adventure, making it an ideal destination for homeschoolers seeking a holistic and enjoyable learning experience.

Why Are College Textbooks So Expensive?

Picture this: it's the beginning of the semester, you've just gotten your teachers' mandatory reading lists, and you're now on your way to the bookstore, dreading the final bookstore bill more than anything.

Why? Because it’s going to come to anywhere between $600 and $1,000 and maybe more.

You probably wonder why these crucial textbooks are so pricey. There are a number of reasons, and all of them make sense when you look into them (even if they might not feel very fair).

Outschool for homeschoolers

If you are a parent looking for some extra help and support for your child this school year, I can highly recommend taking a look at Outschool.

If your student is struggling in any subject, Outschool has classes for support, or private tutoring to help your child thrive this school year.

What is Outschool?

Outschool is a fantastic resource for fun academic classes. They have group classes in almost every subject for all students, ages 3 to 18.

Some of their most popular classes include math, reading, writing, ELA, art, to name a few. They also have specialists that teach kids coding, gaming, crochet, or baking. The possibilities of what might interest your child is endless.

Outschool also offers private tutoring in all subjects. So if your student doesn’t do well in group classes, then a private tutoring might work well for you.

All classes are online, so that you can meet from the comfort of your own home. (IE: no commute. Parents don’t have to sit and wait for the class to end before they can drive home).

Resources for homeschoolers

This is the perfect addition to your homeschoolers weekly routine! Especially for the classes that take place during the school day.

Although this platform is for all students, there are many teachers who work with homeschool students during the day, and then offer extra classes after school.

I have worked with SO many homeschool students that just love to learn something new in math.

What my kids think

My kids absolutely love taking classes on Outschool. I have kiddos that love the group classes because they love meeting new teachers and new friends. There are even social classes designed for chatting with new friends and having good discussion and good conversations.

My daughter loves these types of classes where she gets to chat with the teacher. She loves classes and asks me to sign her up for more all the time!

What I offer

I have also been a private math tutor on Outschool for many years. And I LOVE it! I have met and supported a TON of students from ALL around the world! (Including Asia and Australia).

I have loved working with Outschool, and always recommend it to new families. So if you have never heard of Outschool before, go check it out here and see all that you can find.

Homeschooling Doesn't Mean You Have To Run Yourself Into The Ground

Are you a homeschooling parent? We know how hard that can be because it feels as though you never have any time for yourself. You don’t want to run yourself into the ground, but you also want to make sure that your kids are getting the best of you both as a teacher, and as a parent. It’s not easy, but it can be done, and in this article we’re going to be looking at how you can do this. Keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.

Strawberry Picking Family Field Trip

Just one of the MANY reasons I love to homeschool include all of the fun trips we get to take, and call it a field trip day.

Favorite Yearly Field trip

Nearly every single year, the kids and I will take a field trip to a local farm. And we have been to a bunch!

While we lived in South Carolina, they have an annual strawberry festival each year. We got to go explore, ride a hay ride, pet some animals, and of course, pick some strawberries!

If your kids are fruit fanatics like mine, then strawberry picking is a MUST!

Half of the fun is eating as you go!

How it works

For many fruit picking farms, you can either pay by the pound, or pay by the bin. This year, we chose to get one huge bin to fill with strawberries, for one set price for the bin.

If you are interested in going to pick-it-yourself farms, I would suggest going in the beginning of the fruit season. The upside is there are better fruits to pick from. The down side is that there tend to be more crowds. (We usually go later to avoid the crowds).

If you go towards the end of the fruit season, there are less crowds, which means no lines for fun activities like hay rides. Unfortunately, it also means that the best fruit is probably already picked, and you might be left with less desirable fruit.

I prefer going mid season, not too crowded, but still enough good fruit to pick. But, to be honest, we really just go whenever we can find the time. When schedules are too busy, I’m not planning my field trips around a season.

School Day

Most importantly, this counts as a school day for us! This kids actually learn a ton, create family bonding, and form beautiful memories.

Some states require a certain amount of school days within a school year, and lucky for us, this day counts too. And no stuffy learning stuck behind a desk!
